Jay Shideler Elementary
Jay Shideler Elementary School offer several programs. The following is a list of some of these programs.
Gifted Education
Identified gifted education students (K-6) are those who have met criteria set by Kansas State Guidelines. Academically gifted students in grades 5 & 6 may attend daylong enrichment sessions called "Focus Groups". Placement in these groups is dependent on the individual student's academic needs for additional challenges in one of four curricular areas: Language Arts; Mathematics; Science; or Social Studies. Questions relating to gifted education can be directed to either of the gifted education facilitators who serve Jay Shideler.

Technology Education
All classes from Kindergarten to 6th grade visit the computer lab at least once a week. Students engage in the Success Maker Program weekly. 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students at Jay Shideler Elementary receive an in-depth course in Basi"k"s: Basic Application Software Integrating Keyboarding Skills. Our students gain experience with document creation, manipulation of Technology Education graphics, internet research, proper ergonomics, as well as formal keyboarding instruction. 4th graders in Basi"k"s meet everyday for 9 weeks. 5th and 6th grade classes meet everyday for 4 1/2 weeks. We believe that integration of technology is a great way to support the desired outcomes for each student. On wireless laptops students create multimedia projects, investigate simulations, use the Internet for research, and practice basic computer skills. Jay Shideler is also proud to announce that we have 24 SMART Boards up and operational throughout the building. It is a wonderful technology that teachers use to enhance and engage students in interactive learning. With the SMART Board children are able to see, hear, and touch what is right in front of them. These are the many reasons why the Auburn-Washburn School District employs an Instructional Technology Coach and Technology Aide at each elementary school in the district.
Shideler Singers
Shideler Singers is a musical group composed of 5th and 6th grade students who enjoy singing. Membership is voluntary and they meet one or two mornings a week before school. They have performed at the Topeka Festival of Trees, Shideler winter and spring concerts, West Ridge Mall, and rolling Hills Nursing Home. The performances include everything from traditional holiday music to beach and surfing songs from the 50's and 60's!
Principal's Advisory Council (PAC)
PAC is an opportunity for the older JSE students to become leaders in our school community. The council is made of 5th and 6th graders, two from each classroom. They volunteer their time for one semester. PAC students visit each classroom to encourage all students to become involved and participate in PAC sponsored activities that promote the student pride and ownership in our school. Some of the PAC responsibilities and activities include school spirit days, fund raisers such as Adopt A Family for the holidays and root beer float sales for the Topeka Humane Society, and school improvement projects. PAC students planted flowers and bushes for Earth Day. The council also purchased the fountain in front of the school that was dedicated to former principal Al Camblin, who retired in 1999.
Physical Education
The goal of the Physical Education Program at Shideler is to introduce and develop a wide variety of skills, which can be used in lifetime sports. We are committed to maximum participation for all students all the time. We feel our most important role is to Physical Education help students become good citizens; a student who will respect equipment, themselves, and all others. All students are required to wear proper attire for classes. This means tennis shoes, B.B. shoes, or the like (black soles are acceptable as long as they are non-marking). Girls wearing dresses must change, sit out, or wear shorts underneath to participate. Student in 1st and 2nd grade attend daily physical education classes. These classes are 23 minutes in length. Students in 3rd through 6th grade classes attend classes every other day for 45 minutes. They participate in units on all the major sports, lifetime sports, and a variety of other activities that develop physical skills and promote sportsmanship and self-discipline. We invite you to stop by and visit anytime!
